The Custom Concrete, Steel, and Wood Dining Table
Tempe
2011
The Custom Concrete + Steel + Wood Modern Dining Table was born out of necessity - and vision. Designed and built for my own condo in Tempe, Arizona, this was an early project that set the tone for much of the furniture work that followed.
The condo’s kitchen space was small, so the table had to do more than one job. It needed to seat six comfortably for dinner. It needed to double as a home office, with a natural knot at the end of the wood surface serving as an opening for a power cord. And it needed to function as a kitchen prep island, with a raised concrete surface set at counter height for everyday use.
The base was only the second steel base I had ever made - following the one I built for our fabric-formed conference table. Pairing authentic concrete, blackened steel, and natural wood, the table had an honesty that made it timeless. Paired with Eames dining chairs, it fit seamlessly into the modern condo environment. Nearly two decades later, it still stands as an example of how real materials and thoughtful design create furniture that wears in, not out.
