Eames Concrete Bench with custom GFRC tabletop replacing original surface

The Eames Concrete Bench

Tempe

2007

The Eames Concrete Bench was an unexpected find and a creative experiment. I came across a vintage Eames aluminum group bench with fiberglass shells at an antique store. The original particle board table had deteriorated beyond repair, so I decided to give the piece new life by casting a replacement in GFRC concrete.

I used two different concrete batches for the tabletop, exploring finishes and techniques in the process. While my design taste has evolved considerably since then, this bench still represents an important step in my journey as a furniture maker. It was about saying yes to the experiment, learning from the process, and discovering how concrete could transform even iconic mid-century furniture.

The Eames Concrete Bench was never about perfection - it was about growth. A reminder that every stage of the craft has value, and that even early exercises can create pieces that are fun, functional, and part of a larger story of evolution.
