Monolith cracked concrete outdoor dining table commissioned by Design Within Reach

The Monolith Dining Table

Maui

2010

The Monolith Dining Table was commissioned by Design Within Reach as part of our Cracked Concrete typology - a series that embraces fracture as a deliberate design language.

This massive outdoor dining table measured seven feet by seven feet, with a 6-inch thick concrete top resting on a heavy welded steel base. Unlike some of our earlier cracked tables that integrated living grow trays, the Monolith was pure form - fracture as aesthetic, monumental presence as function.

At the time, the table was cast in a previous generation of our GFRC mix, before we developed the Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) we use today. It was sealed with a soy-based topical sealer, which has since been retired in favor of our proprietary reactive sealer - a healthier, more durable, and food-safe finish.

Commissioned by one of the most respected names in modern furniture, this table still represents a powerful milestone. It embodies everything we stand for: authentic materials, design innovation, and furniture built to last for generations.
