SumoMaya Concrete Countertops
Scottsdale
2014
The SumoMaya Concrete Countertops tell a story of collaboration, restraint, and timeless design. We partnered with renowned Scottsdale designer Jeff Low to bring his client’s vision to life. Inspired by the raw, broken board-formed concrete he had admired in Mexico City, the client initially wanted countertops with exposed rebar and jagged edges.
Instead, we steered the design toward something more refined yet equally authentic: a board-formed concrete edge paired with countertops that were only partially sealed. By not closing the surface fully, we allowed the concrete to patina naturally over time, embracing the beauty of wear while still providing a functional, durable surface.
Cast in our clay color, the countertops blended seamlessly into the space. More than a decade later, they still look incredible - aged gracefully, carrying the story of both the restaurant and the material itself. In a place like SumoMaya, a Mexican-Japanese fusion restaurant in Scottsdale, concrete’s ability to embody both strength and subtlety was the perfect fit.
