The Workshop Bench
Tempe
2015
The Workshop Bench was created during one of our Concrete Design School workshops, a space where makers explore the possibilities of concrete furniture design. For this class, we introduced a constraint: attendees could only use plastic sandbag material and plywood as formwork. By limiting the materials, we focused attention on what matters most - design.
Out of those simple tools came something striking. The Workshop Bench demonstrates how fabric forming captures the pull of gravity, the tension of fabric, and the beauty of imperfection. Though the formwork was humble, the design outcome revealed the strength of creative thinking.
Cast in GFRC concrete and sealed with our non-toxic reactive sealer, the bench is both functional and sculptural. More than just a piece of furniture, it stands as proof that innovation doesn’t come from expensive materials - it comes from ideas.
